musing way: introduction
My name is Katirina Belmonte, and I am a Queen without a court.
When I still lived in the Queen's court in Terreille, I prayed daily I wouldn't feel that connection -- that I wouldn't meet anyone who belonged to me. Any person, creature or object that was of value to you was a target in those courts, and I could afford to draw no eyes. Borden, who served me then and serves me now, largely escaped their notice only because they assumed that my attachment to him was one of mere cruelty, and seeing him in pain would only bring me pleasure.
But that's the way it is, in the courts of the Priestess's puppets. Sometimes you swallow their poison so thoroughly it becomes a part of you. And I -- I must confess, I don't know that I would want a court. I don't know that I would be able to bear someone belonging to me in that way. Because I failed so many. There were so many that I couldn't save.
And sometimes I wonder if that, that fear and that failure, makes me only a little better than the Queens who ravaged the land.
These are the things that define me: I will not be weak. I have no court. And I will never stand by again while atrocities are committed.
